Comic talk: Persepolis

A few years ago I happened to stumble upon a comic with a beautiful red cover and a really intriguing title: Persepolis. So naturally when I first picked it up I was expecting ancient Persian stories in the form of a comic. What I got however was very different but not less interesting. The story follows a little girl through the changes in the Iran thought the Iranian Revolution. To be honest until this story I was unaware of the political state of the country as I always thought it was a strictly religious country.

It’s not only the historical part of the story that makes it interesting. The point of view is that of a little girl and the comic is written taking that in great consideration. The writer is actually the protagonist so this makes it even more realistic. There is cruel realism in this comic and many personal sad stories but what is also present, all the time, is the hope and the fantasy of a child as well as the revolutionary nature of a teenager.

All in all it is the growing up of an everyday girl in an not everyday environment.
